Cynthia Erivo stars in Harriet, the biopic about one of America’s greatest freedom fighters. Harriet tells the real life story of the bold and courageous Harriet Tubman.
In this riveting movie, Harriet initially escapes slavery just to free herself, but once freed, she could not sit still while her people remained in bondage. So despite the sage advice of friends, she risked her life to go back south into slave territory and lead, not only her family, but hundreds of slaves to freedom too. Harriet was a wanted criminal in the eyes of slave holders. To the slaves, she was a true “Moses.” My favorite line from the movie is “Be Free or Die.”
The gifted Cynthia Erivo is fantastic in her role as Harriet. And adding to the marvelousness of this Focus Features release is an incredible cast of stars helping to tell this gem of a real life story, including Leslie Odam, Jr., Clarke Peters, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Vondie Curtis-Hall and Janelle Monae’. Harriet was directed by one of the movie industry’s most talented directors, Kasi Lemmons (she also wrote the screenplay). Whitney Houston’s former film business partner, Debra Martin Chase served as is a producer on the project. Harriet will arrive in theaters on November 1, 2019.
Harriet is a family entertainment movie and history lesson all rolled into one. So you have to see, if for the history lesson alone. I highly recommend you take your family to the theater to see Harriet on opening weekend. You will not be sorry.
